Hi Oppo,
Welcome to another week where we play the “what did I rent this week?” game. The rules are simple. I’ll give you three hints and you have to try and guess what I rented this week. You’ll find out if you’re right when I post the full review tomorrow!
Anyway, let’s get to it. Your hints this week are:
American SUV
Was first introduced as a body-on-frame SUV in 1997 (for the 1998 model year). It has since grown to a full size SUV (3 rows) and transitioned into a unibody construction (haven’t they all?).
What makes it unique, is that even though it’s a unibody vehicle - it still has an available V8 engine. I don’t know of any other American unibody-direct competitors (outside of its corporate sibling) that offers a V8 anymore so this really makes it one of one.
So.... What do you think I rented?

Trailblazer/GMT360. EDIT: I think the GMT360 is BoF....In which case I say Exploder.

Not a Grand Cherokee.

Durango

None of the above... Keep in mind this is a brand new 2016 that can have a V8.

I was reading it and would have said Explorer until the V8. Seems like Durango is it, which was the second on my mind.
Without the full review, or too many details, how was it?

Durango

It was a fine vehicle. I’m just not sure why they’re making it. The full review will be up tomorrow but it’s way too much of a Grand Cherokee for my tastes...

I haven’t been in one for a looooonnnnngggg time but just by looking at it my thoughts were that it’s melted a bit into a GC, if that makes sense.
It’s like it exists because of its past but is no longer truck enough to exist on its own in the FCA family.

Your hint was very hinty

The Durango’s always been available with 3 rows. I think the 3rd row was optional on the 1st gen, but the ‘98 that my parents used to have had 3 rows.

Yeah I’m 90% sure you’re right. I guess I was just trying to make the distinction between it being a full size (3 row) crossover rather than the Jeep GC which isn’t available with three rows.

I think that FCA feels they need an SUV on the market with 3 rows. Even though anyone shopping a CJD dealer will just get a minivan.
We only have ONE on the lot at the dealer I work for, and maybe 20 Grand Cherokees at any given time.

Yeah, I talk about that a lot in my review and video review which I’ll post tomorrow after I get home. I think it’s a fine car, I just don’t know why they are building it (other than because they feel like they have to)...
